USMC CHALLENGE COIN CONVENTIONS
Marine Corps coins follow a more conservative aesthetic than other services. The Eagle, Globe, and Anchor is almost always present — either dominating the front or held in a featured position. Motto text is typically Latin and centered or arced; unit designations are spelled out in full rather than abbreviated. Marines tend to favor heavier stock (3.5mm or 4mm), antique finishes that bring out the EGA relief, and edge styles that read formal (rope cut, smooth).
The MEU, BLT, and barracks coins follow distinct conventions; the MARSOC and recon coins follow tactical conventions; the DI coins follow ceremonial conventions. Each requires the right finish, weight, and symbolism to read correctly to Marines who'll be handling them.
MEU AND BLT COINS
MEU coins commemorate the full deployment cycle (typically a 6–9 month float). The front usually carries the MEU designation (11th MEU, 13th MEU, 15th MEU, 22nd MEU, 24th MEU, 26th MEU, 31st MEU, etc.) with the EGA prominent. The back typically shows the operational area (WESTPAC, CENTCOM, AFRICOM), named operations, port calls, and the float dates. MEU runs are usually 300–800 pieces sized to MEU strength plus the supporting squadrons. BLT coins (Battalion Landing Team) are built at the BLT level with the parent battalion designation featured.
MARSOC AND RECON
MARSOC coins — Marine Raider Regiment, Marine Special Operations Companies (MSOCs), Critical Skills Operators — tend tactical: antique bronze, black nickel, sometimes dual-plated with dark backgrounds. Unit symbology is understated; operational specifics handle OPSEC the way you'd expect. Force Recon and Division Recon coins follow similar conventions — tactical finishes, lower run quantities, premium materials.
DRILL INSTRUCTOR & CHIEF WARRANT OFFICER COMMEMORATIVES
DI commemorative coins are a Marine tradition — issued by Drill Instructors at MCRD San Diego or MCRD Parris Island, often given to recruits at the end of their training cycle or carried as the DI's personal recognition piece. These are small-run premium pieces with the Hat (campaign cover) prominent and the DI's company designation. Chief Warrant Officer coins (CWO/WO5 and the CWO program more broadly) are another distinct tradition — premium finishes, ceremonial weight, often featuring the gold-and-red CWO insignia.
DEPLOYMENT, RETIREMENT & MEMORIAL
Marine deployment commemoratives extend beyond MEU/BLT to specific named operations and theater rotations. Retirement coins for senior NCO (SSgt and up) and officer retirements (Capt and up) are small premium runs, often engraved with name and dates of service on the back. Memorial coins for fallen Marines are handled with the gravity they deserve — extra care on the art, extra patience on revisions, no rush at any step.
